Tears T-Shirt

Sometimes there are no words for the hurt you feel. And sometimes the only way to heal your hurt, is to feel your hurt.

Do not fear your pain; it is not bottomless. Do not fear your tears; they will not flow forever.

Tears will not drown you. In fact, it is the opposite. When you allow yourself to cry freely without judgment, shame or restraint, eventually you are buoyed, your load lightened.

Over the years I have seen many people who struggle to cry. I, too, had my own complicated relationship to tears.

But I have learned that laughter and tears go together like opposite sides of the same coin. Squelch one and you squelch the other.

This is why I’d like to make a case for crying.

This is why I drew The Crying Girl and put her on a T-Shirt.

I wear this shirt when I am at my most tender. When the pain of life and the suffering in the world feels too much to bear. I wear this shirt when I have no words, only tears.

The Crying Girl reminds me to love my broken heart, that incomprehensible pain is as holy as ecstatic joy.
